T/Major John Jacob Elbert

Action for which recommended -

This officer was the senior M.O. with the 6th Bn The Nigeria Regiment at our stronghold in the Meza Valley known as Aberdeen. At one period when our other strongholds at Henu and Broadway were being attacked, casualties from all Brigades of Special Force had to be evacuated through the hands of Major ELBERT at Aberdeen. His work getting patients out of Light Aircraft, treating them, and later getting them onto Dakotas for evacuation, kept him on or near the air strip, which was invariably the target in many air raids, at all hours of the day and night.

His tireless energy and complete disregard for his personal safety when handling the sick and wounded was a fine example to all who saw him work, and gave comfort and confidence to all he treated. He organised the limited resources so well that he was able to handle efficiently over a hundred cases a day.
