[Transcript of Recommendation of Award]

Military Cross - Chindits Awards

3rd Indian

DAHFORCE (London Gazette lists The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders)

Date of Recommendation

14  July 1944

Regtl. No.

Rank and Name

A/Major William Nimmo

Action for which recommended -

Major NIMMO, who took part in General WINGATE's Brigade's operations in BURMA in 1943, held the appointment of Force Demolition Officer and as such commanded many of the combined British and Kachin parties who operated against the L of C between BHAMO and MYITKYINA which was in constant use by the enemy prior to the commencement of DAHFORCE operations. That enemy movement along this road was seriously interfered with by road cratering, bridge destruction, mining, booby trapping and (illegible) is largely due to Major NIMMO's personal leadership and example and his determination to execute his orders to impose maximum interference upon enemy movement to the best of his ability.

Major NIMMO's conduct was at all times exemplary, and by hard study prior to operations he learnt sufficient of the Kachin language to enable him to lead the guerilla bands immediately the force entered the hill tracts.
