At 'BROADWAY' on 29 March 44, 8564 Mk Khalbahadur Khattri was a
Section Commander in a fighting patrol of 15 men under his Platoon
Commander (Jem. Yembahadur Sahi).
The enemy was contacted in the jungle 100 yds forward of the South
perimeter and they put down a heavy barrage of L.M.G. fire and
grenade thrown from trees. Nk Khalbahadur Khattri with his section
continued to advance covered by the other section but 2 men became
casualties. Whilst going forward to retrieve the L.M.G. of one of the
wounded men, the Naik was himself hit by a grenade in the leg and
shoulders. Ordering his men to stay where they were, he helped to
carry back a badly wounded man of his section and then returned to
the scene of the action although in great pain because of his
wounds. He then rallied his men and continued to advance coming
under fire from a sniper in a tree whom Nk. Khalbahadur Khattri shot
down with his Tommy Gun. He continued his attempts to advance but
was finally ordered back by his Platoon Commander.
He set an example of courage and leadership under very heavy fire,
worthy of highest praise.
