Unit

Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire attached 7th Bn The Nigera Regiment

Date of Recommendation

31 July 1944

Regtl. No.

Rank and Name

Lieut Joseph George Crowne

Action for which recommended -

Owing to force of circumstances, this officer had to be called in to take over Bde Signals just before the Bde evacuated White City and took the field as a normal L.R.P. Bde.

His Signal Section was hastily extemporised and very short of equipment and personnel. He is the only officer and he has no CSM, COMS or any assistant except two European operators who have frequently been sick.

This Officer's training is limited to that of a normal Inf Signal Officer, yet his untiring energy, optimism, and ability to improvise has produced results from a very makeshift Signal section.

For many days on end he took his watch at operating owing to sickness of personnel. He has consistently overworked himself but has kept going, and inspired this Section to do likewise.
