Rank and Name

Cpl. Charles Albert RALPH

Action for which recommended -

Cpl Ralph was a wireless operator in comd of a W/T det on Adv Bde HQ during operations in BURMA and ASSAM between 27th Jan and 3rd May 44. His det consisted of himself and two other operators, an orderly, four muleteers with the four mules carrying the wireless and equipment.

During the approach march through the NAGA Hills to the River CHINDWIN conditions of weather and terrain were appalling, and the mules and their loads falling down the hillside a daily occurrence. Despite these difficulties Cpl Ralph by his personl example kept his det cheerful and efficient and his wireless in operational condition. Frequently after a tiring days' march including the rescuing of fallen mules and equipment he worked long hours into the night to get essential messages through to Rear HQ.

After the CHINDWIN marching conditions became easier but the hours of W/T operating longer. By his excellent leadership and organisation his det were quite outstanding in their speed of setting up station. The condition of his four mules at the conclusion of operations was the best in Adv Bde HQ. From a Signal point of view the standard of operating of Cpl Ralph's det was of the highest order and in the best tradition of his Corps.
