On 26 March 44, Lieutenant SMITH was commanding No. 5 Platoon astride the road
at INWA village, protecting the Column's only watering pt. His platoon position
was strongly attacked at night by about a platoon of Japanese. The Japanese
pressing their attacks in the most determined manner overran the two right hand
sections. He rallied the remainder of the platoon and with grenades and PIAT,
drove off the enemy inflicting severe casualties on him.
The enemy made
three more further attacks that night, in rapid succession. But each time
Lieutenant SMITH and a small party repelled them. A total of thirty Japanese are
known to have been killed. His coolness and leadership were of an high order and
set an example to his men, then and throughout the remainder of the action.
